De groepsschakelaar is ontworpen om fasen opeenvolgend in te schakelen met behoud van eerder ingeschakelde fasen. Hij kan bijvoorbeeld worden gebruikt wanneer drie verwarmingselementen van elk 1 kW in serie worden geschakeld - inclusief opeenvolgende verwarmingselementen kan een verwarmingsvermogen van 1 kW, 2 kW, 3 kW of 4 kW worden gecreëerd.
